A holiday in the Haidel region!

Aussichtsturm am Haidel in BayernExperience the unique Bayerwald landscape around the Haidel

The 1,167 m high Haidel which the salt traders once used to pass over on their way to Bohemia is the region’s landmark with its viewing tower and information pavilions: it impresses with its breathtaking panorama of the forests on the Bavarian-Bohemian border as far as the Alps.

Many hiking trails traverse the Haidel region. The ghost village of Leopoldsreut is not far from the Haidel tower. The last village inhabitants moved away around 1960. Today, nature has reclaimed the area where houses and fields used to be. Just the church and old school house are still standing. The school house was called the “high school” as it was the highest situated school house in Germany (over 1,100 m) at that time.

A holiday next to the Bavarian Forest National Park

You can get from the valleys to the Rachel and Lusen peaks on more than 200 km of marked hiking trails. The forests grow undisturbed, rivers and streams find their own untamed course. Visitors can observe local animals in spacious enclosures and aviaries on a forest walk lasting several hours in the Bavarian Forest National Park’s wildlife area.
